Supplies Needed:

To perform a weekly cleaning, you’ll need:

  • Coffee Cleaning Product
  • Milk Cleaning Tablets
  • Portafilter Brush
  • Blind Basket or Disk
  • Microfiber Towel
  • Water Container

Backflushing the Grouphead

  1. To begin, remove the portafilter.
  2. Purge the grouphead for 3 to 4 seconds.
  3. Using the supplied brush, clean the portafilter gasket.
  4. Insert the blind filter disk into your portafilter (or swap the basket for the blind basket) and add the coffee cleaning detergent (tablets or powder both work).
  5. Lock in the portafilter.
  6. Remove the cup-holder grid.
  7. Turn the brew button on for 5 seconds. Then turn it off for ten seconds. The cleaning detergent will work through the lines and run out in the drip tray. Repeat 8-10 times until the water runs clear.
  8. Afterwards, remove the portafilter and take out the blind disk. Rinse both with water.
  9. Insert the blind filter disk and lock in the portafilter again.
  10. Turn the brew button on for 5 seconds. Then turn it off for ten seconds. Repeat 8 – 10 times. This will manually rinse water through the lines to ensure all cleaning detergent residue is gone.
  11. Empty and clean the drip tray.
  12. Clean the portafilter and filter basket. You can do this by placing them into cleaning detergent for 15 minutes, then rinsing with hot water to dissolve any coffee residue. A portafilter brush will also help remove any coffee grounds and harsh stains. Rinse thoroughly with water to remove any cleaning detergent and wipe with a microfiber towel.
  13. Insert the filter basket into the porta-filter and place it into the group head. Reattach the drip tray and cup-holder grid.
  14. Clean the outside of the machine with a damp cloth.

Cleaning the Steam Wand

  1. To begin, prepare your milk cleaning solution.
  2. Submerge steam wand in the hot milk cleaning solution and let it soak for 15-30 minutes.
  3. Remove your steam wand from the solution, rinse, and fill your container with fresh water.
  4. Submerge your steam wand in the clean water. Pulse the steam wand to expel any residue.
  5. Remove your steam wand from the water and purge the steam wand.
  6. Clean the steam wand with a damp cloth.
  7. Empty your drip tray and clean the outside of the machine with a damp cloth.
You’ve now completed weekly cleaning on the Rancilio Silvia Classic!
