Silvia Workflow...

Overview of the Brewing to Steaming Workflow on the Rancilio Silvia.

The Rancilio Silvia has been a classic and reliable home espresso machine since the 90’s, made with commercial grade components and known for it's compact design.

The Silvia Classic is a single boiler espresso machine. In order to accommodate the high temperature needed for steam as well as the lower temperature needed for pulling espresso the unit has a steam and hot water setting, as well as a coffee setting.

In this video and blog, we’ll provide an overview of the Silvia Classic’s workflow including how to steam, how to brew, how to switch between these two modes, and our tips and tricks when brewing multiple drinks.

How To Brew...

  1. Turn on the machine by pressing the center switch. The machine will automatically turn on to the coffee brewing setting. The amber light indicates that the machine is heating. When only the green light is on, the machine has reached brewing temperature.
  2. Choose your filter basket – single or double shot.
  3. Prepare your portafilter with ground coffee and lock it into the group-head.
  4. Start brewing by pressing the coffee switch on the top left.
  5. When you’ve reached your ideal espresso shot, press the switch back to stop brewing.
  6. Remove portafilter, knock out coffee, and clean. You can press the brew switch again briefly to purge the grouphead.

How To Steam...

  1. With the machine on, turn on the steam switch.
  2. Wait for the amber light to turn off and the green light to indicate the machine has reached ideal steaming temperature.
  3. Purge the steam wand to get rid of any residual condensation.
  4. Submerge the steam wand in pitcher. Tilt for a whirlpool.
  5. Twist the steam knob to begin steaming.
  6. Twist the knob back to the beginning position to stop when you have reached your ideal milk temperature.
  7. Turn off the steam switch.
  8. Purge the steam wand and wipe with a microfiber towel.
  9. Switch on the hot water switch. Open tap slowly.
  10. Close tap as soon as water comes out of the hot water spout. Switch off the hot water switch.

Switching Between Modes...

So now that we have covered how to brew and how to steam, you might be thinking about what to do with the wait time between modes. So, what is a good way to switch between steaming and brewing modes so that you can make your morning latte at home as efficiently as possible? You can simply brew your espresso, then wait a few minutes for the steam setting to heat.

But if you're looking for something a little quicker, we recommend the following workflow...

  1. Turn on the steam setting and let that come up to temperature.
  2. Prepare your portafilter with coffee. Leave it off to the side, as we will be steaming first.
  3. Steam your milk, then purge and clean the steam wand.
  4. Switch to coffee mode by turning off the steam setting.
  5. Flush the group head and open steam wand to drain the hot water. This will bring down the boiler temperature and lower pressure. You can stop when the steam wand is mostly dispensing water instead of steam, or if the light turns orange. Close the steam knob.
  6. When the light turns green, brew your espresso.
  7. Pour your steamed milk into your espresso and enjoy your homemade latte!

Give that process a try. At the end of the day, the best workflow is the one that you feel comfortable with.

Brewing Multiple Drinks...

What if you need to brew multiple milk-based drinks? There are multiple strategies you can do.

If you don't mind the wait time, you can prepare the drinks one at a time using the above workflow.

If you're looking for something a little more efficient, you can use a bigger pitcher to steam milk for two drinks at once. Then, pull two shots of espresso back-to-back and create your drinks.

Enjoy!

Next time you make a latte or cappuccino give that workflow idea a try. The most important thing is to find a workflow that works great for you!
